Strategic Vision 2010 Total Value Index

Volkswagen Jetta, Jetta SportWagen, Passat, CC and Tiguan Outrank the Competition in Strategic Vision's 2009 Total Value Index™ (TVI)

We are please to announced that Volkswagen vehicles have received top ratings from buyers in Strategic Vision's 2009 Total Value Index™ (TVI). Volkswagen's Jetta and Passat tied for first place in the medium car category, the Jetta SportWagen took the top spot in the medium multi-function group, the Tiguan was first among small SUVs, and the CC not only topped the larger car segment, but also received the highest TVI score of any vehicle in the running for this year.

"Durability alone and simply satisfying customers is not enough for buyers who demand both immediate and long term Value," says Alexander Edwards, President, Strategic Vision. "Manufacturers like Volkswagen are listening to customers, reacting quickly to, and creating vehicles with increased quality and competitive prices. This is truly an exciting time for car buyers, today and in the near future."

"Volkswagen is proud to have a variety of its vehicles recognized and enjoyed by today's buyers through Strategic Vision's Total Value Index," said Mark Barnes, Chief Operating Officer, Volkswagen of America, Inc. "All five of these models represent the core values and abilities that set the Volkswagen brand apart, with a combination of innovative design inside and out, fuel efficient engine options, and fun-to-drive, German-inspired driving characteristics."

The Strategic Vision Total Value Index was calculated from 48,228 buyers who purchased a 2009 model year vehicle between September 2008 and March 2009. The vehicles' Total Value is calculated starting with clear statements that owners make about value, including the price paid, innovation, expected reliability, fuel economy, resale value, and more. Strategic Vision then incorporates the importance of the variables that make up the entire ownership experience, and determines the vehicles' worth of the attributes compared against the costs involved, also known as the "True Value." The Strategic Vision Total Value Awards™ have been presented annually since 1995.

GTI Automobile of the Year

GTI Named 2010 AUTOMOBILE Magazine Automobile of the Year

The all-new sixth generation GTI has been named the 2010 AUTOMOBILE Magazine Automobile of the Year. This marks the second time in its history that the GTI has won this prestigious award. In AUTOMOBILE Magazine's twenty year history of awarding their top honor, the Volkswagen GTI is the only make and model to ever win it twice.

"At a time when the world's economy is in shambles and fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are on everyone's minds, there remains only one car that ticks all the enthusiast boxes without setting off a single wretched-excess alarm. That's the Volkswagen GTI, and that's why it is, once again, Automobile Magazine's Automobile of the Year," said Joe DeMatio, Executive Editor, Automobile Magazine.

"Having our GTI named AUTOMOBILE Magazine's Automobile of the Year once again is a tremendous honor for our brand," said Mark Barnes, Chief Operating Officer, Volkswagen of America, Inc. "We're thrilled that the staff of AUTOMOBILE Magazine acknowledged that today's sport's car consumers are looking beyond horsepower and going fast, rather they are looking for vehicles that are practical, fuel efficient, and fast. The GTI truly embodies what the Volkswagen brand is all about--affordable, efficient, and fun-to-drive German Engineering," Barnes added.

First introduced in the U.S. in 1983, the GTI drew admiration for its combination of sporty performance and practicality. The 2010 GTI is Volkswagen's definitive return to its groundbreaking, hot hatch sports car, offering a modern and dynamic extension of the automaker's original "pocket rocket."

The 2010 GTI is a solid and aggressive sports model that features Volkswagen's highly acclaimed 2.0-liter 16-valve DOHC turbo-charged four-cylinder engine that produces 200 horsepower and 207 lbs.-ft. of torque. It's available with an automated manual DSG® transmission that utilizes direct shifting, which essentially automatically depresses clutch-shift points more efficiently and quicker than even a professional driver can. For those driving enthusiasts who want the unique control of a clutch, the GTI comes with a standard six-speed manual transmission. Top speed is electronically governed at 130 miles per hour in the U.S. The 2010 GTI starts at $23,490, and attains a fuel economy rating of 32/24 highway/city when equipped with the DSG transmission.

New for the 2010 GTI is a standard Electronic Limited Slip system that Volkswagen has named XDS. The system electronically monitors input from various wheel sensors and, in the event of slippage, transfers extra torque to the wheel or wheels with the most traction. The 2010 GTI also comes standard with numerous other safety features including: a three channel Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Anti-slip Regulation (ASR), Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), Engine Brake Assist (EBA), Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and like all 2010 Volkswagen's, Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP®).

2010 Jetta, Golf, Passat, and Tiguan Honored With TOP SAFETY PICK Awards From the Insurance Institute for Highway

Volkswagen 2010 Jetta, Golf, Passat, and Tiguan Honored With TOP SAFETY PICK Awards From the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety

Four 2010 Volkswagen models - the brand-leading Jetta sedan, the all-new Golf four-door, the stylish Passat sedan, and the nimble Tiguan - have each received the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK award for 2010: The
highest rating possible from the non-profit research organization. The annual award recognizes those vehicles that perform best in protecting passengers in the Institute's front, side, and rear crash test evaluations, and the newly required roof-strength test evaluations. The Institute only tests vehicles with electronic stability control (branded Electronic Stabilization Program® / ESP® on Volkswagen vehicles), and head protection airbags.

"TOP SAFETY PICKS are the vehicles on the top rung for safety," said IIHS president, Adrian Lund. "These Volkswagen models are in an elite group that afford the best protection in the most common kinds of crashes, and have electronic stability control to keep drivers out of many crashes altogether."

"The safety of our cars is of the utmost concern, from the initial design stages, all the way through to the maintenance procedures at dealerships," said Mark Barnes, COO, Volkswagen Group of America. "To have such an important group as the IIHS recognize not one, but a total of four Volkswagen vehicles with this prestigious award is a true testament to the care, safety, and precision we strive for with every Volkswagen we build."

Beyond their fun-to-drive dynamics and fuel-efficient engines, every 2010 model year Volkswagen vehicle includes, as standard, Volkswagen's Prevent and Preserve Safety System. Composed of more than 40 different features, the Prevent and Preserve Safety System helps keep drivers and passengers safe during normal driving conditions, and reduces the severity and consequences of a possible crash. The Jetta, Golf, Passat, and Tiguan also come standard with an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), ESP, up to eight airbags (depending on model), and more.

In addition to the Prevent and Preserve Safety System, the entire 2010 Volkswagen lineup includes the no-charge Carefree Maintenance Program. With it , all of the scheduled maintenance for the vehicle, as described in its maintenance booklet, is
covered for the length of the New Vehicle Warranty -- three years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

The 2010 Volkswagen Jetta sedan (starting at $17,605), Golf four-door (starting at $19,190), Passat sedan (starting at $26,995), and Tiguan (starting at $23,200) are available now at Volkswagen Of Orland Park.

Jetta Family Top Saftey Pick

Volkswagen receives Top Safety Pick Awards from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
A total of four Volkswagen models are the latest of the company's offerings to earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK award for 2009, the highest rating possible from the non-profit research organization. IIHS recognized the 2009 Volkswagen Eos, Jetta, Passat, and Rabbit each as a TOP SAFETY PICK. Earlier this year Volkswagen's all-new Sport Compact Utility Vehicle, Tiguan, was also named a TOP SAFETY PICK.

The ratings from IIHS also apply to the 2009 Jetta SportWagen and the 2009 Passat Wagon.

"Safety is a top priority at Volkswagen and this recognition by the IIHS highlights that we are a market leader in offering some of the safest vehicles on the road today," said Mark Barnes, COO, Volkswagen of America, Inc. "Our Prevent and Preserve Safety System, standard on Volkswagen vehicles, is an important factor in the high level of safety and protection in our vehicles."

The TOP SAFETY PICK award recognizes vehicles that perform best in protecting passengers in the Institute's front, side and rear impact test evaluations, and includes only vehicles with electronic stability control (branded Electronic Stabilization Program on Volkswagen vehicles) and head protection airbags.

Volkswagen seeks to provide a high level of occupant protection in all its vehicles through a comprehensive and evolving approach to vehicle safety. Volkswagen was the first non-luxury manufacturer to include an electronic stability control system at no additional cost on every 2009 vehicle it sells – ahead of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) deadline requiring all 2012 model year vehicles to have such systems.

Volkswagen's electronic stability control technology works in conjunction with anti-lock brakes and helps reduce loss of control and rollovers to avoid crashes. NHTSA predicts nearly 10,000 lives could be saved each year if automakers included stability systems as standard equipment.

The Prevent and Preserve Safety System portfolio for MY2009 consists of important safety features, all of which contribute to protecting the driver and passengers as well as possible, helping avoid crashes and keeping the severity and consequences of possible crashes to a minimum.

2009 Tiguan Safety

Not Just "Good" – It's the Tops!

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has announced its new roof strength rating system to help consumers pick vehicles that will help protect them in rollover crashes. Of the twelve 2008-2009 compact SUVs tested, they rated Tiguan as having the strongest roof. To receive the institute’s highest rating of "Good," vehicles must have roofs that are at least twice as strong as minimum federal safety standards require. Tiguan literally "topped" the list!

IIHS Not Surprised

IIHS president Adrian Lund commented, "It's not surprising that Volkswagen and Subaru earn good ratings in our new roof test because these automakers were among the first to ace our front and side tests." He says this because roofs become stronger, in part, when manufacturers beef up the vehicles to perform better in front and side impact crash tests. Strong A and B pillars help prevent intrusion in these types of crashes and also help hold up the roof.

Why Roof Strength Matters

When vehicles roll, their roofs hit the ground, deform, and crush. Stronger roofs crush less, reducing the risk that people will be injured by contact with the roof itself. Stronger roofs also can prevent occupants, especially those who aren't using safety belts, from being ejected through windows, windshields, or doors that have broken or opened because the roof has deformed. Roofs that don't collapse help keep people inside vehicles as they roll.

What This Means For You

The best way to prevent injury is to keep vehicles from rolling over in the first place, and that every Volkswagen comes standard with our world-class Electronic Stabilization Program (ESP). Also point out that, when vehicles do roll, occupants get an extra measure of protection from the front- and rear-side curtain airbags that come standard on the Tiguan.
